Steak & Potatoes

Making dinner at home is always special. Keeping core ingredients stocked in my kitchen allows me to whip up great meals on the fly! This meal was steak on a bed of rice served with “Mash and Bake” potatoes (I just made that term up off the top of my head).

The ingredients.

I made this all from core ingredients that I keep readily stocked in my kitchen.

  • Top Sirloin Steaks
  • Russet potatoes
  • Basmati rice
  • Pre-mixed salad
  • Colby cheese
  • Garlic
  • Olive Oil
  • Ghee (purified butter)

The preparation.

Looking at the ingredients, the potatoes take the longest and involve the most prep, so I’ll start with those.

Cooking the potatoes.

First I washed the potatoes of any excess dirt. Then I boiled the potatoes for about ten minutes. I don’t want them to cook all the way through, just the outer edges. After the ten minute boil, I took them out and sliced them.

Sliced Potatoes and Onions

Potatoes & onions, in a pot, on a stove. Nom.

I then placed purified butter, olive oil, minced garlic and the potatoes all in a pot and continued to cook the potatoes in that pot. About half way through I added onions to the potatoes. I’m cooking the potato and onion mixture on medium high heat so the edges will crispen.

Mash and Bake Potatoes

Mashed?
Baked?
More potatoes please.

After that, I emptied the potatoes into an oven pan and covered them with Colby jack cheese. After baking in the oven for about twenty minutes at 350 degrees, the potatoes cooked all the way through and the flavor infused throughout.

The steak and rice.

While the potatoes cooked, I grilled the steaks and cooked the rice. I heated my electric grill after greasing it, and put the steaks on once it was hot enough.

Steaks, salt & pepper.
Now grill.

The steaks were easy, I only seasoned them with salt & pepper, which is absolutely perfect anytime you cook beef. So if you don’t know what to season your steak with, your safe bet is always going to be just salt and pepper.

I made some plain white basmati rice to serve the steak on. Rice is simple to make as long as you follow the directions on the package. Just don’t lift the lid too early and you should be good. Serve with some salad and bam! A healthy and clean meal made at home!
